   LES KNIGHT & HIS CREW

The men who took part on Operation Garlic  ending up in Den Ham
16 September 1943

This is Les Knight and his seven-man crew.  For the mission Operation Garlic an eighth crew member was added to this world famous group of airmen.  Sgt.Les Woollard became the extra member only hours before take-off. Bomber Command added an extra crewman to all the eight Lancaster's taking part on this mission.

Les Knight's sacrifice not only saved the village of Den Ham from disaster but gave the crew the opprtunity to for them all to survive the war.  Two members were captured almost immediately but the other five were back in England only months later, thanks to the help of the local Resistance Groups, and local families who took immense risks to save the lives of these men.
With special thanks to Charles Foster for the use of these Dambuster crew biographies originally published on his world famous Dambuster Blog.
