Staff Sergeant Willis Sondag was one of a ten-man crew of a B24 "Liberator " bomber which crashed north of Dem Ham on 22 december 1943.
The crew were all member of the United States Air Force. They were on a mission to attack Osnabruck in Germany.
Seven of the crew died where the aircraft came down on the Hammerflier. Two of the crew were captured and one escaped.
Initially all the dead were buried in the old cemetery but after the war six were repatriated to the United States.
Willis Sondag is the only member of the American crew to be re-buried in the Netherlands when he was laid to rest in the American cemetery in Margraten, Limburg.
